As we enter February, we’re excited to share a variety of engaging learning experiences that will enrich our students' growth and understanding across multiple subjects.
Black History Month: In honor of Black History Month, we will dive into the stories and contributions of influential African Americans. Students will explore the lives and legacies of important figures in history, fostering an understanding of their impact and the importance of equality and justice.
Valentine's Exchange: We will be celebrating a classroom Valentine's Exchange on Thursday, February 13th! Students are encouraged to create and bring handmade valentines to share with their classmates. Please note that in alignment with Bella Mente's Wellness Policy, candy and treats are not allowed. We look forward to seeing the creative and heartfelt valentine your child brings
Wax Museum (Biography Writing Showcase): On February 26th, students will showcase their writing and research skills through the Wax Museum project. They will select a historical figure, research their life, and create a biography that will be presented in a living museum format. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to practice public speaking, research, and creative expression.
Continent Study of Africa: Our continent study this month will focus on Africa, exploring its diverse cultures, geography, and history. Students will engage with a variety of resources, including maps, books, and multimedia, to gain a comprehensive understanding of this vibrant continent.
Science Lessons on Animal & Plant Diversity: Science lessons this month will center around the incredible diversity of animals and plants found in our world. Students will explore ecosystems, adaptations, and interdependence in nature. This study will be especially important for our Grade 2 students as they prepare for their field trip to the San Elijo Lagoon on February 6th, where they will observe these concepts in action.
Data, Graphing & Measurement: In math, students will work on data collection, graphing, and measurement skills. These foundational concepts are essential as students learn to organize, interpret, and communicate information through charts and graphs, laying the groundwork for more advanced mathematical concepts in the future.
We’ve created a DonorsChoose Project: Math Tools for Geometry, Fractions & Measurement to help provide additional math resources for our Lower Elementary students! These materials will support hands-on practice and make learning math even more engaging.
If you’d like to help, please visit our DonorsChoose page [link to DonorsChoose] to make a donation. Every contribution helps bring these important resources to our classroom!
To support your child's learning at home in a Montessori way this month, you can engage with the academic concepts they’re exploring in class by creating meaningful, hands-on experiences. For example, during Black History Month, you can share stories or watch documentaries about influential figures in history and have conversations about the importance of equality and justice. To help your child prepare for the Wax Museum project, encourage them to practice their presentation at home, refining their speaking skills and confidence. You can also assist them in creating a culturally respectful costume or prop to make their character come to life. For the Africa continent study, you could explore maps together, cook a recipe from an African country, or learn about the animals and cultures of the continent. At home, you can encourage your child to observe plants and animals in your neighborhood or during walks to further explore the diversity discussed in their science lessons. For math, help your child practice measuring objects around the house or collect simple data on things like family members’ favorite foods or daily temperatures, and create simple bar graphs together. These activities will complement what your child is learning in school while allowing them to apply and connect their knowledge in everyday life.
This month, we will focus on important character-building lessons that help our scholars develop essential social and emotional skills. We’ll explore "Developing Relationships," emphasizing the value of building positive connections with others. Our next lesson, "Thinking Win-Win," teaches scholars how to approach situations with a mindset that benefits everyone involved. Following that, we’ll dive into "Acting with Courage & Consideration," helping scholars understand the balance between being brave and mindful of others. Finally, we’ll address "Standing Up for Others," encouraging scholars to speak out and act in support of their peers. We’re excited to see the growth in our scholars as they practice these important life skills!
Our Wax Museum Project is just around the corner! This exciting project allows students to showcase their research and presentation skills by bringing a historical figure to life. At home, you can support your child by helping them practice their presentation and create a culturally respectful costume or prop that aligns with their character. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to build confidence and take pride in their learning.
Wax Museum Day will take place on Minimum Day (February 26th) in the Multi-Purpose Room. Parents are invited to join us for this special event and celebrate the students’ hard work! Please note the following schedule for the showcase:
Before attending the showcase, be sure to check in at the Front Office. Afterward, you will be directed to the Multi-Purpose Room, where the Wax Museum will take place. We can’t wait to see all the fantastic presentations!
