February 2025

  • Upper Elementary Message:

This month, our students are diving into exciting topics across all subjects! In Social Studies, they are exploring pivotal moments in history, from the American Revolution in 5th grade to Ancient Greece in 6th grade. Science lessons include fascinating studies on space systems, waves, and genetics, sparking curiosity and discovery. In Math, we are building skills in numbers and operations while applying measurement concepts to real-world problems. Additionally, students are enhancing their writing through informational projects that connect to their studies. We are proud of their hard work and growth this month and look forward to sharing their progress with you!

  • Montessori Connection at home:

    Grade 4:

    • Cultural Activities: Have children research family immigration stories or explore local railroads' history in your area. Visit a museum or landmark related to the railroad or immigration.
    • Science Connection: Build a simple telegraph or string telephone to explore how sound travels. Experiment with light using mirrors and flashlights to study reflection and refraction.

    Grade 5:

    • Historical Exploration: Encourage your child to write about their “Revolutionary Hero” or role-play a debate between colonists and British officials. Read historical fiction like Johnny Tremain.
    • Science Activity: Observe the night sky and identify constellations. Create a scale model of the solar system using household items to understand relative distances between planets.

    Grade 6:

    • Cultural Activities: Try cooking traditional Greek recipes or making a simple Greek column out of paper and cardboard. Discuss democracy by holding a family vote on an activity or meal.
    • Science Focus: Explore family traits by creating a heredity chart showing inherited characteristics like eye color or height. Watch a documentary or read about DNA to dive deeper into genetics.

    Math (All Grades):

    • Everyday Math: Practice mental math with real-life scenarios like calculating grocery totals, measuring ingredients for a recipe, or converting measurements (cups to milliliters).
    • Projects: Create math games like place value puzzles or homemade flashcards for practicing operations.

  • Leader in Me Program:

This month, our Leader in Me focus is on building strong relationships and fostering a supportive community through four key principles. Students are learning about Extending Trust by recognizing the importance of honesty, reliability, and accountability in their actions. With Thinking Win-Win, they explore ways to seek solutions where everyone benefits, promoting fairness and collaboration. By Showing Consideration, students practice empathy and kindness, understanding the value of respecting others' feelings and perspectives. Lastly, they are encouraged to take a stand for what is right by Standing Up for Others, advocating for fairness and inclusion. These skills empower students to be leaders in their classrooms and beyond.

  • Projects:

Students in upper elementary are finishing up informational writing this month. They are learning to research, organize, and present factual information clearly and effectively. Through engaging projects, students practice skills such as note-taking, outlining, and drafting while exploring topics related to their studies in history, science, and other subjects. This work helps them develop critical thinking, writing fluency, and the ability to communicate knowledge in a structured and meaningful way.
