In March, our Primary scholars will learn about reptiles along with the study of the continent of South America. South America is home to iguanas, crocodiles, snakes such as boa constrictors and anacondas, and the world’s largest tortoise, the Galapagos giant tortoise that can grow up to 6 feet long and weigh over 500 pounds.
Our Primary scholars continue to practice rhyming, an important skill for reading and spelling achievement, along with the repetition of letter names and their sounds. The use of songs and nursery rhymes are used for learning rhyming words, repetition, and rhythm, which help young children build their vocabulary, improve pronunciation, and develop phonemic awareness (the ability to hear and manipulate sounds in words). In math the Primary scholars are subtracting numbers and using the vocabulary words “take away”.
Engaging your child in practical life activities at home will continue to build their self confidence. At school our Primary students help clean the tables and sweep the floor. They help pass out food and organize the shelves. At home your child can continue these activities by helping with household chores like watering plants, cleaning toys, and folding laundry. Your child will be proud of all that they do to help at home.
To boost your child’s language development, you can play “I Spy…” together. Check their understanding of descriptive words when you have them guess the object you see. Then encourage your child to get descriptive when telling about the object they see. You can use words that tell about location, color, size, and shape. This is a fun game for car rides or times when you have to wait patiently somewhere.
If you are looking for an opportunity for your child to have building block experiences, The Mission branch of the Oceanside Library has LEGO Brick Building every Friday in March from 3:00 to 4:00.
In the Leader in Me program this month, we will focus on important character-building lessons that help our scholars develop essential social and emotional skills. We continue to work on "Developing Relationships," emphasizing the value of building positive connections with others. We’re excited to see the growth in our scholars as they practice these important life skills!
In March, our scholars will be beautifying the Primary patio space. In continuation of our study of the parts of plants, they will be planting seeds and watching them grow. We hope that the beautiful plants will make a welcoming space for pollinators. Soon we hope to see butterflies and birds along with the beautiful flowers our scholars plant.
