In December, scholars explore a variety of exciting topics. They learn about the history of language through the Montessori Story of Language, discovering how language connects people across time and cultures. They also explore the Arctic and Antarctica, learning about the unique geography, wildlife, and climates of these regions.
In math, scholars work with shapes, measurement, and numbers. They practice recognizing and describing 2D and 3D shapes, comparing attributes like length and weight, and adding and subtracting larger numbers. They also learn how to divide shapes into equal parts.
In addition to these subjects, scholars are busy preparing for the Winter Spectacular performance and learning about holidays from around the world, discovering how different cultures celebrate this time of year.
You can support your child’s learning at home by encouraging exploration and hands-on activities, which are key to the Montessori approach. To help with language, have conversations about how language connects people and cultures. You can also read together, tell stories, or discuss where words come from.
For the Arctic and Antarctica, explore these regions as a family. Visit the library for books or watch videos to learn more. Spend time outdoors discussing the climate and animals in your environment to connect these ideas to real life.
In math, practice shapes and measurements in everyday activities. Sort objects by shape, compare sizes or use measuring tools when cooking or crafting. You can also practice counting and simple math with items around the house.
As your child prepares for the Winter Spectacular and learns about holidays from around the world, discuss different traditions and celebrations. Create your own family traditions or explore those from other cultures.
The key is to offer opportunities for your child to explore, ask questions, and connect what they’re learning to the world around them. The more they engage in these hands-on experiences, the more they’ll grow in their understanding.
This month, scholars will focus on learning important skills for setting and achieving goals as part of our Leader in Me program. First, they'll explore setting meaningful and achievable goals and understand the importance of persistence and planning. Then, they'll learn practical strategies for staying focused, overcoming challenges, and celebrating their progress along the way. These lessons help scholars take ownership of their growth and build confidence in their ability to succeed. We encourage you to talk with your scholar about the goals they’re setting and how they plan to achieve them!
Scholars are busy preparing for the highly anticipated Winter Spectacular! While we don’t want to give too much away just yet, we can share that the performance will be centered around the theme of Winter and the Polar Regions. It’s sure to be a memorable celebration of creativity, learning, and the beauty of winter.
Please be sure to mark your calendars for the big event: December 19th from 5:00–7:00 PM. You won’t want to miss this special performance as our scholars showcase their hard work and talents. We look forward to seeing you there to celebrate with us!
